Small is beautiful!

Cabo Verde, a teeny-weeny archipelago country off the West African coast in the central Atlantic Ocean, and also known as ‘Sahara in the Atlantic’ made history on Saturday in Miami. A debutant in the World Cup 2026 with just half a million population won the hearts of millions of soccer fans across the world as they went down fighting against the mighty Argentina which lifted the trophy as many as four times.

Vozinha, the Superhero

Josimar Jose Evora Dias, the 40-year-old goalkeeper, came to the World Cup as an unknown! Better known as Vozinha, he represented the nation’s never-say-die attitude, unflinching fortitude, unwavering commitment and stubborn refusal to back down. He symbolizes The Beautiful Game’s essential spirit: Never give up, and fight till the end.

This is football, a metaphor for life!

Argentina fans, or for that matter every soccer aficionado, thought it would be a cakewalk against Cabo Verde. Well, what the world had seen instead was completely a different spectacle: a lone man’s fairytale journey under the bar!

Vozinha grabbed the headlines in their match against Spain saving brilliantly as many as 13 goals. In the Group match, they remained unbeaten, including a draw with Uruguay (2-2).

FIFA and World Cup referees

Watching the crucial tie and listening to the commentary keenly on Saturday, I had a feeling that commentators at the back of their minds wanted Argentina to win.

Maybe a FIFA directive!

In case, the defending Champion is shown the door, ticket sales will be impacted seriously in the later stage of the tournament. One can understand, well and truly, that ticket sales matter and it matters a lot to the football’s world body!

And that’s why the referee didn’t allow the game to proceed a little further and blew the final whistle immediately after 120 minutes.

Reason: If Cabo Verde gets an equalizer, and the match is stretched to penalty shootout and a miracle happens, the FIFA’s financial interest will get a jolt.

Vozinha left the World Cup pitch forever, but he etched his name in football history as the tournament moved on.

This is Football!

The Champion will cheer on the 19th but football fans across the world won’t forget this braveheart for eons of time. The man who taught us: “Never stop dreaming. Never stop believing!”

Salute to you, the legend,
